marriage is sort of an important social issue in the life of my character. Her husband and her lover are bound to come up in one way or another and her dealing with the social implications etc are unavoidable. I mean, this is set in the early 1800s...men are gonna come up.

That's more than okay. As long as you write a story where the relationships aren't the sole focus, you should be fine.
