Nice one. You could perhaps imagine someone like Slughorn giving special consideration to his favourites, or at least skimming their essays and writing down a good mark almost before they started. (Although I'd suspect that Sluggy might drop a student like a hot potato if they suddenly became rubbish and didn't have a potential excuse or other reasons for him to be interested in them, like Harry.)
