Shadows in Light and Dark (Narcissa, others, R)

Title: Shadows in Light and Dark
Author: Envinyatar (aka [livejournal.com profile] envinyatar15)
Fandom: Harry Potter
Characters: Narcissa, Andromeda, Bellatrix, Lucius, Harry, Voldemort, Draco
Rating: R
Highlight for Warnings: DH-compliant, *ungraphic sexual activities, including adultery, threesomes and rough sex, featuring Totally Obvious Canon Pairings.*
Prompt: #15 You can no more win a war than you can win an earthquake. -- Jeannette Rankin.
Word Count: 3,013
Summary: In times of war everyone has to choose sides. In the aftermath it might not be the one you would have seen yourself leaning to previously, but the intuitive decision of the moment, drawn from a mix of hope and desperation, often has a way of being the ultimately right one.

Notes: Written for the [livejournal.com profile] femgenficathon 2007. Many thanks and much love to [livejournal.com profile] zebraspots05 for listening to my gradual panicking and putting up with all the crappy drafts I threw at her. And, naturally, for her amazing beta job. There is some dialogue you will recognise, which is taken from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, pp. 563-564 and 580-581 British hardcover edition, thusly totally not written by me.

Ooh. Wonderful fleshing out of Narcissa as a character.

oh, that bit. I disagreed wholeheartedly with most of DH, but I like seeing the characters fleshed out beyond the cursory touches of JKR's pen. Narcissa here is multi-faceted, and the dynamic between her and the other characters is very interesting. The interplay between Lucius and Narcissa, Narcissa and her sisters, etc. And how she resigns herself to change...

Mmhm.
