Well, it's not like reading any category of fic is an obligation. It's supposed to be fun, and all, so you read whatever appeals. I was just wondering whether I was misunderstanding your use of the term Darkfic, for the reasons I explained. I'm frequently a little behind on fandom terminology.

I think the average rating on genfics is probably lower than on pairing-focused or sex-focused fics, simply because sex is one of the things that raises the ratings, no matter what the overall tone. But there are definitely stories rated for violence or other disturbing content, that don't contain any sex or romance. (Actually, there are some authors who can get seriously disturbing without -- probably -- technically leaving a G rating.)

I didn't mean to be rude about it or anything. It's all a question of what you've run into, and sometimes of definitions (there are fandoms where "gen" includes all het, just to confuse matters), and I really wouldn't have room to go calling other people naive. :)

...Actually, come to think of it, with regard to definitions -- I have seen people use (or assume) "gen" to mean "general" in the same sense as "general audience" and therefore that it ought to be G-rated or close to it. I don't think that's common, though I don't know for sure, but it may influence the ratings distribution.
