Well, the point the genficcers I'm most familiar with keep trying to make is that while sex is all very well (or ill, I suppose, depending on what kind of story you're after), there is an enormous variety of other topics. Which would include some pretty unpleasant ones.
I suspect, though, that whether it's a function of fandom or not, there may be a tendency among some people to feel that a tale of torment or depravity is incomplete or wimpy or unrealistic if the sexual variety doesn't come into it. (And then there may be others who are wary of including the sexual variety in a serious, genuinely dark story about Bad Things Happening, just because there are so many stories where it's there for a kink.)
