For me Tonks is one of those characters I tend to find more interesting in fic than in actual canon.
Perhaps because she's so uneven in canon - it's frustrating. She's this incredibly interesting character with distinctive appearance, powers and funny character traits. But she also never seemed to be the same person two books in a row. I think how she was treated was more dependant on the needs of plot at the time than true to the potential of her first appearance, which was a pity.
She fascinates me too - as does McGonagall. I love to write about tough, complex women, and wonder how they got the way they are today.
