Author: [livejournal.com profile] rose_griffes
Fandom: Doctor Who
Rating: barely PG, for themes
Warnings: er... vague, minimal references to racism and classism (mostly set during 3.08/3.09 "Human Nature"/"Family of Blood")
Prompt: 148) If you stood up and told the truth in the wrong way, it was not true any longer, though it might be as powerful as ever. -- Diana Wynne Jones (born August 16, 1934), English novelist and non-fiction author.
Summary: Martha Jones sees the world universe
Author's Notes: Spoilers for season three of new Doctor Who. (I haven't watched series four yet.) Lines in bold italics are quotes from Ten (and John Smith) throughout series three. Author: [livejournal.com profile] lls_mutant
Fandom: Battlestar Galactica (new)

Prompt: My wish is to ride the tempest, tame the waves, kill the sharks. I will not resign myself to the usual lot of women who bow their heads and become concubines. -- Trieu Thi Trinh (225-248), 3rd-century Vietnamese revolutionary who led a rebellion against Chinese invaders. Known as "the Vietnamese Joan of Arc."
Summary: The last cosmetics vendor in the universe has turned up dead. Ellen Tigh needs to figure out who killed her, before she's accused of the crime herself.
Author's Notes: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] rebelliousrose for the brilliant comment about a murder mystery centering around the last bottle of perfume in existence.

Prompt: 12. Could I write all, the world would turn to stone. -- Caterina Sforza (early 1463-1509), Italian warrior-ruler of Imola and Forli.
Summary: Nyota Uhura is a communications officer, which means she’s good with words. So why can’t she find the right words to talk about what’s happened?
Author's Notes: Capt. Robbins isn’t really an OFC; it’s one of the names used in some of the spin-off material for Number One (while I normally have a great deal of respect for DC Fontana, I hate the idea that Number One really is her name; and wouldn’t that get confusing once you get promoted past XO anyway?) At any rate, Number One is awesome, despite how little we see of her in canon.
I have taken the prompt rather loosely; I wanted to write about things that can and can't be said. Alas, I struggled with it a bit, and I'm not entirely satisfied with the results. I hope you enjoy it nonetheless.

I do not own Star Trek, in any of its forms, nor am I making any profits.

Robbins bought her whisky, the Scottish kind, with a reek of smoke on the nose. Uhura winced, and thought of burning circuits. )

Author: [livejournal.com profile] lareinenoire
Fandom: Gossip Girl
Characters: Blair Waldorf, Vanessa Abrams, Jenny Humphrey, Serena van der Woodsen
Rating: PG
Warnings: Footnotes, excessive quotation, and dodgy interpretations of Shakespeare, monarchical theory, and identity politics.
Prompt: 3) Silly things do cease to be silly if they are done by sensible people in an impudent way. -- Jane Austen (1775-1817), English novelist.
Summary: "I am Richard II, know ye not that?" Where better for a dethroned queen to gain some perspective than from a dethroned king?
Author's Notes: I had more trouble than I would have anticipated in coming up with a response to this prompt, and the fic may well reflect that, so my apologies in advance. Michael Boyd's production of Richard II for the Royal Shakespeare Company sadly never made it to the United States, but the fic presupposes a short run in New York. Takes place during 2x25 The Goodbye Gossip Girl; spoilers up to that point. Title comes from Richard II, IV.i.288. Many thanks to my beta-readers [livejournal.com profile] angevin2 and [livejournal.com profile] rosamund.

Prompt: 142. The facts are always less than what really happened. -- Nadine Gordimer (born November 1923), South African author, anti-apartheid and anti-censorship activist, and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature (1991).
Summary: This is not a story of death or killing or blood or horror. These things happened, and they happened in a fight that was called a war, but they don't come together to make a war story. At least, not the way Luna Lovegood tells it.
Author's Notes: Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] slam_girl for helping me with this fic. She is, as always, a most excellent friend. Along with my given prompt, I was influenced by Tim O'Brien's wonderful book The Things They Carried so with that in mind I'd like to dedicate my story to all the women soldier out there, who do not, I fear, always get the respect they deserve.

Title: Majesty
Author: Kelly Chambliss kellychambliss
Fandom: Harry Potter
Rating: PG
Characters: Minerva McGonagall, HRH
Word Count: 6000
Prompt: #60 -- Courage is the price that life exacts for granting peace. The soul that knows it not, knows no release from little things; knows not the livid loneliness of fear. --Amelia Earhart(July 24, 1897 -- missing July 2, 1937, declared dead January 5, 1939), American pilot and author; first woman pilot to fly across the Atlantic Ocean; first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Summary: Once upon a time, there was a great queen and a powerful witch. . .
Author's Notes: I've interpreted the prompt very liberally. Courage is here, definitely, along with a bit of fear (since there can be no courage without it). And I think you'll find loneliness as well (though not connected to fear, I don't think). Peace? I believe so, but you may decide for yourself.  // There are several shifts in point of view; I hope they aren't too confusing.  My thanks to my excellent beta readers,[livejournal.com profile] therealsnape and [livejournal.com profile] mountainmoira.

Prompt: 17) I thought how unpleasant it is to be locked out; and I thought how it is worse, perhaps, to be locked in. -- Virginia Woolf (1882-1941), English novelist and essayist.
Summary: Aoi Hyuuga spent two years in a basement, blind and with amnesia, and when she finally gets out she is angry.
Author's Notes: I really didn't think the way that Aoi was treated was fair - she suffers a lot over the course of the story and no one seems to care, aside from how it affects her heroic brother, and that just seemed... cheap. This story may make more sense if you read the background blurb.

Title: Those Who Favor Fire
Author: [livejournal.com profile] anna_bird
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Some violence and swearing.
Prompt: No. 79: Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. -- Helen Keller (1880-1968), deaf-blind American author, lecturer and political activist. She campaigned for women's suffrage, pacifism, people with disabilities, the Industrial Workers of the World (the IWW, or the "Wobblies"), socialism and birth control, and helped found the ACLU.
Summary: AU, after Enemy at the Gate (series finale). The City of Atlantis and inhabitants have returned to Pegasus from their heroic rescue of the planet Earth at the hands of the Wraith. But something is wrong.
Author's Notes: Roughly 17,000 words and posted in three parts! I strayed quite a bit from the original prompt, but I do think it serves as a good quote about the character of Teyla and her people in general. Boatloads of thanks to the best betas money cannot buy, [livejournal.com profile] sasha_feather, [livejournal.com profile] were_duck for their time and insightful comments/criticisms, and especially [livejournal.com profile] taste_is_sweet for her big damn overhaul, helpful comments and a better, much more interesting title (which comes from this poem).
