Summary: Twelve months go by a lot faster when she thinks it's all she has left.
In July Hermione is restless. She is glad to be home, be with her parents, but she feels like there is something she ought to be doing. She had been invited to the Burrow but she wants to wait for Harry.
However waiting for Harry is going to drive her mad.
She has read ‘Greatest Witches and Wizards of All Time (Limited Edition, Self Updating Version)’ from front to back twice already. Her parents are worried she can tell, she just can’t tell them why.
She owls Ron and Ginny almost daily be she doesn’t know what to say to Harry. She writes him letters but throws each one in the bin before she can send it.
Harry,
How has your summer been so far? I can hardly wait to see Ron and Ginny -
She throws this one away too.
Hermione sits on her bed and begins to re-read ‘Greatest Witches and Wizards of All Time’ hoping it will take her mind off of everything until August.
At the beginning of August Hermione meets up with Harry at the Burrow. Finally, she thinks.
A few days later Harry and Ron go to take their Apparition tests. Hermione stays back with Ginny and they talk about everything. Except Harry, or Voldemort, or the war, or the previous school year. Their conversations are long and empty.
There’s a POP and “We passed!” Ron says.
Harry apparates in after Ron and looks a bit green. “We passed.”
“We heard!” Hermione is always so proud of her boys.
And a few days after that Hermione, Harry, and all of the Weasley’s pack up for France. Hermione has never seen a Wizarding wedding.
“Harry! Hermione! I am so glad you could make it!” Fleur exclaims as she hands each of them a box of white roses and then tells them where the roses should be put.
“Why are we doing this?” Harry asks.
“Flowers always look best when arranged by human hands instead of magic!” Ginny says in her best impression of Fleur.
It’s September and Hermione thinks of Hogwarts. She wonders, not for the first time, would have happened if Hogwarts had not opened it’s doors for another year. The thought scares her. Closing Hogwarts would be just as if Voldemort has won after all. At least that’s how Hermione sees it; no muggle born children becoming the brightest witch or wizard in there year, no new friends and no old friends.
“Do you think they’re having pudding?” Ron asks.
Harry looks up from reading the Prophet, “What? Who?”
“Back at Hogwarts,” Ron says this like it’s the most obvious thing in the world.
Hermione wonders if Ron can read her mind and sincerely hopes he can’t.
“Oh.” Harry says, “yeah, they probably are.”
No, Hogwarts will never close: Dumbledore wouldn’t have let it.
Two weeks in to October and Hermione wakes up just as the moon reaches it’s height. She shivers and brings the blanket up to her chin. She thinks of her parents and decides to owl them in the morning; she’d go to see them in person but she can’t let herself get distracted so close to finding a Horcrux.
Hermione falls back asleep.
It’s been ten days since she’s owled her parents and she still hasn’t received a reply. Harry says that as soon as they find the horcrux they’ll apparate to her parents home and Ron assures her that everything is okay. He assure her that she’s just nervous and worried, that all of them are and really, everything is fine.
They find the horcrux two days before Halloween and destroy it as soon as Hermione figures out how.
Halloween morning they apparate to the Grangers home to find it in ruins. Hermione cries in the the kitchen surrounded by burnt wood, pots and pans, and an old muggle school book that fell from her bedroom when the ceiling gave out. She cries and thinks she has known ever since that night she woke up and thought of them. There is nothing she could have done to save them if she had been home. Hermione knows if she had been with them she would have died too. She knows but-- but--
It’s been a week since anyone has seen or heard from Fred Weasley. A week and Ron still paces the halls of the Leaky Caldron unable to sleep.
“Ron, please,” Hermione tries to get Ron to go to bed. She’s worried about him and it’s starting to show in dark circles under her eyes.
Harry stands up and moves toward Ron but stops when he thinks he doesn’t know what to do. “He’ll-- everything will--” Harry doesn’t know what to say either.
“Please,” Hermione tries again.
“We’ll get Voldemort. I--”
Ron spins around to face Harry, “You’ll what? What will you do Harry? Tell me! This is your fault; you brought him back! It was your blood, Harry!”
Hermione makes a sound like a sob and she bites her lips to keep from doing it again. She wants to yell at Ron, tell him he’s wrong; Harry isn’t to blame for any of this. She wants to, she does but she also wants to hug her mother and hear her father tell her that there are no monsters in the dark. After the death of her parents in October she can’t have those things and now she can’t tell Ron he’s wrong either.
“Harry I’m sorry,” Ron rubs at his eyes with the back of his hands and all the energy seems to drain out of him.
Christmas at the Burrow is subdued. Harry does his best to avoid Ginny without actually avoiding her while Hermione and Ron try their best not to avoid each other. Christmas morning the world appears blanketed in white; everything is quiet and soft and everything smells of gingerbread. Hermione thinks, “This is what we are fighting for.”
“Mom, dad.” Bill is holding Fleur’s hand and they’re standing in the middle of the room, wrapping paper at their feet.
“We um,” Bill blushes and rubs at the back of his neck.
“I’m pregnant!” Fleur exclaims.
“Oh, oh my.” Mrs. Weasley says. She looks shocked before she stands up to embrace Fleur and then Bill. Tears are streaming down her face.
This is a happy Christmas after all.
They celebrate the new year together back at Godrics Hollow. It’s cold but they’re sitting outside anyway because the sky is clear and they can see the stars. If the new year wasn’t accompanied by a pressing weight of death and prophesies Hermione would find the whole thing very relaxing.
“What are your New Year’s resolutions?” Hermione asks.
Ron answers first, “I’m going to-" He looks over at Hermione. "Er, what about you Hermione?”
“I think I’d like to worry less. About rules and such things.”
“Hermione!” Ron sounds shocked, “You’re still worrying about rules? That’s not normal. Harry? What about you?”
“I’m going to live to become an Auror.” Harry is staring at the stars.
Ron makes a sharp whistling noise and brings his mug of hot cocoa up to his lips. Hermione knows it’s hard for Ron because Ron is supposed to be the Best Friend but what is he supposed to say? What do you say to your best friend whose future is all tied up in tea leaves and people who think they know what is best for you?
“Harry...” Hermione doesn’t think she’ll ever know what to say to Harry either.
“I’m really glad you’re both here.” Harry says and he’s smiling now, still looking up at the night sky.
Ron shifts the snow with his fingertips. “We’re your best friends, mate. Where else would we be?”
“Ron's right. As long as you need us we’ll be here.”
And maybe they’ve been saying the right things all along.
“Accio Horcrux!”
They're in Little Hangleton standing outside of a house they can’t get into.
“Ron, I really don’t think that’s going to work this time either,” Hermione says.
Ron stares through one of the front windows as if that would get the Horcrux to them, or them to the Horcrux. “It cant hurt.”
“Accio Horcrux!” Harry tries.
“Oh Harry, not you too.”
Harry just smiles before Ron and him get back to it.
Hermione sighs but doesn’t say anything. Instead she walks around to the back of the house. Maybe another angle will give her the answers. They didn’t cover this in the Hogwarts textbooks.
Hermione picks up a small stone and throws it at a small, dirt covered, window. The stone shatters before it’s anywhere near the house.
She tries to envision the Hogwarts library. She must have read something that could help her here. She tries to remember the restricted section and all the books she had read. One of them must have mentioned barriers, how to get through barriers, how to detect them, and how to understand them.
Tom Marvolo Riddle, Magical barriers, and horcruxes...
“I’ve got it!” She runs back to Harry and Ron, “Harry! I think I’ve figured it out.”
In February they retrieve and destroy the fifth horcrux.
Mrs. Weasley orders them back to the Burrow for Ron’s birthday. Hermione has never been so glad to go. Ginny is in school but Mrs. Weasley keeps her company when Harry and Ron are playing a two-man form of quidditch and members of the Order stop by a lot.
“You seem thinner then when you were here at Christmas, are you eating all right?” Molly asks.
Hermione doesn’t tell her that it’s hard to get a good meal when you’re afraid to stay anywhere too long because of Death Eaters or that when they do manage to eat well she’s too nervous or too busy to eat much. Instead she says, “No one cooks as well as you do and no pudding compares to Hogwarts’.”
They had all expected to see Draco Malfoy again. Only they had not expected to find him ... like that. He was dead and his body had been mutilated and so much blood.
So much blood.
“Hermione,” Ron grabs her elbow to keep her from moving forward. Hermione hadn’t meant to walk closer; she had just wanted to see.
So much blood.
“What--” Hermione tries again, “what could have-- who-- Harry?”
Hermione has so many questions and most of them she doesn’t want answered. She doesn’t want to know.
Harry is standing only feet away from the blood soaked chair and Draco’s body and oh god, the smell. She hadn’t noticed the smell at first though her mind screams that she should have. This is too much.
So much blood.
If she could move she thinks she would be throwing up.
“I think we should leave,” Ron says.
Harry turns and swallows hard. “Yeah,” he looks out the window, “Yeah, we should leave. Now.”
Hermione isn’t sure if she can apparate but Ron is still holding her arm (to tight) and he apparates them both.
They’ve found the last horcrux.
Something is going to happen soon and Hermione can feel it. So can Ron and Harry. Even during the days when the sun is shining so bright it’s there always, like an approaching storm. Soon.
“Where do we go now?” Ron asks.
But it doesn’t matter.
They have been found.
On June 21st, 1998 Olivia Gabrielle Weasley is born to Bill and Fleur Weasley.
Harry is alive, Hermione is alive, Ron is alive. Voldemort is dead. They return to Godrics Hollow together because everything started there and now that it’s over they need to go back.
Ron has to use a cane because he still hasn’t regained full use of his leg and maybe he never will. Hermione is wearing long sleeves to cover the massive amount of scars on her right arm that the healers at St. Mungos couldn’t get rid of. And Harry-- Harry may never be the same but Hermione is with him and so is Ron and they have survived so much together that Hermione knows that they’ll survive this too.
It’s been a long year but now, Hermione is sure, everything will be all right.

Artemisia Lufkin
1754-1855
Artemisia was the first witch to become the Minister for Magic. She was an exceptionally kind Minister and was quite well known for her large array of blue hats. Today her portrait sits in the Hall of Ministers and is always up for giving advice on government issues and fashion.

Helga Hufflepuff
?-?
Helga Hufflepuff is most commonly known as one of the four founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Less known about Helga Hufflepuff is that during her later years she discovered that a white Rose could in fact be used to create an ointment that would cure burns cause by most magical creatures or, when rubbed in the third eye, help the user to fall into a light sleep.

No, Hogwarts will never close: Dumbledore wouldn’t have let it.
Queen Meave
? - ?
Before there was a Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry Queen Meave taught and trained young witches and wizards in the art of magic. While little is known about Meave herself (she was a very private person in life according to a diary she left; 'I do not wish to talk about myself’ are the only words it says,) it is known that Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Helga Hufflepuff, and Rowena Ravenclaw were some of her students.

She cries and thinks she has known ever since that night she woke up and thought of them. There is nothing she could have done to save them if she had been home. Hermione knows if she had been with them she would have died too. She knows but-- but--
Agatha Cooper
1759-1859
Agatha Cooper is best known for her invention of the time turner. In 1793, after the death of her two children, Agatha set out to find a way to bring her children back. She spent fifteen years playing with various dark magics until she discovered a way to bend time. Another four years and she had created a time turner. However after almost two decades Agatha had come to terms with her grief a handed her new invention over to the Ministry of Magic. Agatha eventually left the wizarding world and opened an orphanage.

“Harry I’m sorry,” Ron rubs at his eyes with the back of his hands and all the energy seems to drain out of him.
Keera and Bluinse MacManus
1875 - 1961
While they were not the first nor the last females to play on a professional team they’re identical looks and completely opposite playing styles brought the highest number of people to a game in Quidditch history. Keera played chaser for the Appleby Arrows and Bluinse played chaser for the Wimbourne Wasps.

“I’m pregnant!” Fleur exclaims.
“Oh, oh my.” Mrs. Weasley says. She looks shocked before she stands up to embrace Fleur and then Bill. Tears are streaming down her face.
This is a happy Christmas after all.
Mathilde Morley
1423 - 1557
Later known as Mad Mathilde Morley. Before there was a St. Mungos, Mathilde Morley was a midwitch and healer. Her insistence on performing certain rituals before delivering a baby --washing the mother in water spiced with ginger and garlic; wearing a dried toadstool around her waist; placing 14 grey stones around the unborn child’s home among other things-- eventually earned her the title ‘Mad’.
They celebrate the new year together back at Godrics Hollow. It’s cold but they’re sitting outside anyway because the sky is clear and they can see the stars. If the new year wasn’t accompanied by a pressing weight of death and prophesies Hermione would find the whole thing very relaxing.

Ron shifts the snow with his fingertips. “We’re your best friends, mate. Where else would we be?”
“Ron's right. As long as you need us we’ll be here.”
And maybe they’ve been saying the right things all along.
Cassandra Trelawny
1655-1756
Possibly the greatest Seer of all time. Cassandra Trelawny predicted the Great Magical Drought of 1659 at the age of four, the Goblin Revolt of 1662 at the age of seven, and by thirteen she had predicted countless numbers of trips, bumps, and lost brooms. Her gift was truly something rare and most likely never to be seen again.

“I’ve got it!” She runs back to Harry and Ron, “Harry! I think I’ve figured it out.”
In February they retrieve and destroy the fifth horcrux.
Lexina Lithgow
1496-1592
Lexina, afraid of muggle children braking into her home while she enjoyed a game of quidditch or recreational broom riding, invented a way for her wand to alert her if anyone came within four meters of her home. Lexina’s barrier was such a success that all of her friends and family insisted on having one themselves. Today, there are virtually no wizarding families without Lithgow Home Protection.
Rowena Ravenclaw
?-?
Rowena Ravenclaw is one of the great founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. According to scrolls found in the Ravenclaw Wing it was Rowenas’s Magic that enchanted the ceiling in the great hall. While the enchanted ceiling is not one of the Greatest accomplishments of Wizards or Witches there is no former student who does not wish they could have such enchantments as their own.

Harry turns and swallows hard. “Yeah,” he looks out the window, “Yeah, we should leave. Now.”
Hermione isn’t sure if she can apparate but Ron is still holding her arm (to tight) and he apparates them both.
Ginevra (Ginny) Weasley
1981-2077
After an accident involving her older brother Bill she began her work that would lead to a movement to give werewolves (and later Giants and Vampires) every right possessed by witches and Wizards. In 2010 Ginny Weasley was made head of the new department For the Protection of the Rights of All Magical People.
Lucy Lafferty and Edmund Paddock.
1548-1657, 1548-1653
In 1583 Lucy Lafferty and Edmund Paddock created a small group of witches and wizards trained in the Defense against the Dark Arts to investigate magical crimes in the wizarding world. Their numbers grew and after almost a decade of success the were given full approval by the Ministry of Magic. Today this group is known as Aurors.

It’s been a long year but now, Hermione is sure, everything will be all right.
Hermione Granger
1979-2081
At the age of Thirty-One Hermione Granger became the first muggle born witch to be appointed Minister For Magic. While it was widely believed throughout those who opposed her that she had only gotten the position due to a close personal relationship with Harry J. Potter her time in office was eventually dubbed ‘The Golden Age of the Wizarding World’.

The pacing is great, and the interludes are really well done.
